This year, Motown Records celebrates its fiftieth birthday as one of the most influential black institutions in the United States as far as music and business goes. For a long period of time, it was the most successful black-owned business in the world, and became the home of some of the most influential musicians of all time like Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and the late Marvin Gaye just to name a few. The company was sold in the late 80's to MCA Records, then Polygram, and now its established as a main subsidiary of the Universal Music Group alongside Interscope Records and Island Def Jam.
