Recently, Island Def Jam had a preview of upcoming projects for the next quarter. One of the previews included a new Mariah Carey song entitled "Hate U," from her forthcoming LP, entitled "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel."
Looks like Mariah her last album for all its worth. E=MC2 was not all too bad, but i feel like it did not resonate well with fans because it was not on par with "Emancipation," and the singing was not as impressive as it should have been. Regardless of the music, Mariah "The Voice" is an exceptional vocalist, and fans do not want to see her whisper throughout an entire record, then hit a whistle note to compensate. They want to hear a production, even over singing, and "Memoirs" will definitely be a test to see if she learned her lesson.
The snippet of "Hate U" sounds impressive. The prolonged singing in her whistle register sounds very good, and very reminiscent to Minnie Riperton's technique. Speaking of Minnie, I feel like the album title could perhaps serve as an ode to Minnie. Minnie's breakthrough album was entitled "Perfect Angel," and its R&B classic. It featured the classic "Lovin You," a song that Mariah could cover with ease but has not chose to. I wonder if Mariah will take a leap a cover the song, or take a plunge and cover some of the lesser know songs from the album. I personally think "Edge of a Dream" from the "Perfect Angel" LP would be a great a choice. For 1974, the song was definitely ahead of its time with a great melody and instrumental.
Here is Minnie Riperton's "Edge of a Dream." Check it out.
